i have a 1988 suzuki intruder 750. recommended oil is 10w40. before switching to synthetic 10w40. the bike used to overheat. it runs hot naturally such as after it has plenty of time to get hot and going a short distance, when i stop at light or sit for a minute or two the hot engine light will come on and fan will kick on. but before the synthetic oil it would overheat to the point where the cooland would boil over upon shut off. the synthetic made a noticeable difference. since hearing good things about Royal Purple motor oil (rpmoil.com), i've decided to switch but would like to upgrade to a 15w40 or even a 20w50. the cooler it runs the better! can anyone give me some advice on this? is the 20w50 too heavy and why?

I would consult with someone else but based on what you describe I think the thicker the oil the better 20W 50 is what I would try.

Good luck,

David

It's a shame that you're having problems but i think the oil isn't the single thing to blame for the overheating. Check the cooling system there might be problems there, the fact that it heats up while running at idle is worrying to say the least, what happens when u drive aggressively?

Sure enough you have deposits formed in the cooling system, try flushing out the system and cleaning it. Oil change is also mandatory , the oil you've used might of gone bad from the high temperatures

My opinion is to follow the first advice but also check for problems related to the cooling system , just to be sure

I had the same problem on my old bike, I see that opinion is split here, maybe he should do an oil change and a cooling system clean, my problem was the oil
