oil change? Quote | Reply

I'm a new rider and just bought my first bike. It's an '81 Honda CD 750C. I've had it for about a month now. I started it up the other day and the exhaust was turning a blue color. I was wondering if it needs an oil change or just a tune up. If it needs an oil change, is this something I could do myself? I would like to learn how to do simple maintenance on motorcycles. Thanks

Hello Kevin,

First congratulation on your new bike. The blue smoke won't probably go away. When older bikes are parked with the side kickstand some oil is accumulated and burned after starting the bike up. I would change the oil anyways and I'm sure you won't have a problem doing it yourself.

I would recommend you to buy the manual for your bike. Check on Amazon.

Take care,

David

blue exhaust smoke is burning oil, its could be a simple fix if its bad valve seals, if its valve seals it will smoke as soon as you start it up, or smoke when you leave off the throttle when riding, if it smokes with a load on the engine, its rings. Its an easy fix either way, won't cost much as long as the cyls are ok. Take it to a Dealer, tell him to give you a quote what it will take to fix it, tell him to go over the whole bike to see if anything else is wrong, I mean you don't wanta spend money on a top end job if the rest of the engine is shot, like the gearbox and the clutch, if you do get a top end job, do good maintenance, change the oil the first 500 miles, then 2000 miles after that. If the bike is in good shape, ur better off and its cheaper to fix it, than buying a new bike, the newer bikes have problems too, you may buy a newer bike with more problems than you have now, I have seen that happen. Today I am seeing many guys that are not mechanically inclined owning bikes, bikes need maintained like crazy, I go over my 2 bikes once a week, I get anal, I check the electrical wiring connectors, nuts and bolts come loose, I tighten them up, and I always check the oil after the engine is warmed up, and many other things, bikes require a lot of maintenance.

I have to agree with the maintenance issues i have friends that spend more time working on their bikes then riding the, they are mechanical nutters and crazy about the condition of the bikes, they wouldn't let one screw not tightened

SlySlyHa-ha arkanosman you just described me !!!! I had a lot of problems with my first bike and this one was included, unfortunately the rings were absolutely busted and it was running like crazy ( the bad crazy) . A quick change and it was good to go, it will be the same with yours

If you started the bike after a long time that's normal don't worry, it it's a problem that's been along for a long time it might be the rings

My old Harley did that exact same thing a lot of years ago after being left in the garage for the winter

Bikes start to accumulate oil in the cylinders if they are left for a long time in one place

what is blue? is the pipes turning blue, up around the engine, or is your exhaust emitting blue smoke? if your pipes are turning blue, thats normal. if you have blue smoke coming out of the pipes, time for new rings.
