I need to give a "break in" ride for a BMW 1200RT and a 1200GS on a 800 mile Phoenix-Grand Canyon loop at the same time. If you have a solution to the problem "How to ride more than one bike at the same time", or you are interested in joining me on the ride between September 6th and 14th, please contact me at gabor@azride.com.
I'm looking ONLY for experienced riders, who know how to treat a bike in her initiation phase.
Ride Safe!

I'm glad you are interested in Arizona!
This is a a true Riders Paradise with a lot of hidden gems.
My wife and I moved here from NJ last September when we opened a BMW motorcycle rental and touring company in Scottsdale.
This was the time when I posted the original message, looking for partners for the break-in ride.
You can get some idea of what awaits you here if you check out the pictures I recently took:
Page and Canyon de Chelly:
http://www.azride.com/AZ_06Chinle/INDEX.HTML
White Mountains:
http://www.azride.com/AZ_06WMtn/index.html
The road that takes you to Alpine from Clifton winds through more than 460 curves and 600ft elevation change!
These pictures also illustrate that Arizona is much more than flat desert, cacti and heat, as it is mistakenly perceived.

Ride Safe,

Gabor

We are back from Mexico, thankfully in one piece.
The ride was awesome. Sometimes a bit challenging and a lot of times very wet.
The monsoon season is definitely not the best time to ride in this part of Mexico.
I had no choice because this was the only time I could make the trip happen
but I hardly recommend to avoid going into this in July and August.
A full night rain almost completely washed the road away in the canyon.
We were happy to get out without any serious trouble. I did not take
pictures of the most challenging parts but some of the pics hint how the conditions were.
Despite of the watery ride we do not regret at all that we went on this journey!

Wow Gabor! Amazing trip! Thanks for all the pictures... Did you ride through the hanging bridge and the fences on the side? That looked scary Crazy

At least you had the right bikes. I wouldn't have made it with my BMW R1150 RT would I?

Take care,

David

David,

I'd not recommend going into the Canyon on a touring bike, though it is not totally impossible.
There are always people who actively look for danger and inconveniences. Probably one of them can try it. I'd not encourage any sane riders to do so.
The road to Batopilas is more challenging mentally than physically. Riding on a very narrow, steep, rocky dirt road with thousand plus feet depth on your side is not the most comforting feeling. Neither riding over the flimsy wood bridges even if the suspension bridge is only for pedestrians. But all these circumstances provide primarily mental challenges. It's like swimming in the Ocean. As long as you can stay on the surface, it does not practically matter how many fathom it is to the bottom.
I don't want to provide a falls impression of the potential dangers of a trip like this. The actual road conditions is only part of the package and the rest ranges from emergency situations through weather conditions to mechanical break downs. All in all, you have to be prepared. It's not like riding in US where your cell phone is working, towing is available 24/7, there is an MC garage in a fifty mile radius, not to mention the ambulance. Nevertheless, thorough preparation can mitigate the potential hazards.

I rellay enjoy your comments. I can only imaging the sensation... I did San Francisco - Nebraska in ovember 2 years ago riding on ice for many miles so I totally understand the mental fatigue... No cell or Road help is another thing though... I am glad you made it back safely and look forward to hear of your future adventures.

Take care,

David
