Bike Touring? Quote | Reply

Hi, i'm a student in Denmark, doing a project on motorbike touring; i was wondering if some of you out there could help me with a couple of things?

-I need to know mainly if people can think of problems they often have when on a biking holiday, anything that gets on your nerves or could be done better...
-Any recurring problems with the bikes, such as bad layout of instruments etc...?
-Has anyone ever use a GPS navigation system or have any comments on them? Do they spoil the fun....

I'd be very grateful for any input!

Hello Felix,

David here from San Francisco, CA. Thank you for stopping by and sharing such an interesting posting. I love motorcycle touring and I think I will be a great candidate for your survey! Blush

-I need to know mainly if people can think of problems they often have when on a biking holiday, anything that gets on your nerves or could be done better...

Yes! I like to use a lot of cool gear and gadgets that make the ride more comfortable and fun. I ride a 2004 BMW R1150 RT, a sport-touring motorcycle and have ridden many more in the past. Well, back to the point... Cool What really drives me nuts and gets on my nerves really bad is the feeling of for some reason not feeling fully great. Maybe something I forgot or something that doesn't feel right with gear or equipment. That's why I try to buy and use the best whenever I can afford it. I like credit Wink

Other than that, I that really really enjoy the ride in a quiet relaxed mode.

-Any recurring problems with the bikes, such as bad layout of instruments etc...?

Yes, always! No bike is perfect and motorcycle design still has a long way to go. After you ride many bikes from many different places and ages you start creating the perfect motorcycle in your mind. One that won't ever exist!

However, if you are on the right bike and the overall feeling is good. then you learn to live with it and really enjoy what you have.

An example of such a situation, I miss the computer that told me how many miles I had left in the tank on my previous bike (99 bmw K1200 LT) I don't have that any more but I still know how to manage my gas routines.

-Has anyone ever use a GPS navigation system or have any comments on them? Do they spoil the fun....

I use it all the time. A small Garmin GPS unit attached to mi gas tank by Velcro and plugged to my power plug. (BMW goodie). I use it mostly for touring.

It makes the ride way more fun. You have more Trip info and knowledge of distances, speed, directions, etc. Thanks to GPS I don't have to stop anymore and ask for directions!

I hope I have helped with my answers. It was fun!

I will try to keep replying to Posts of any MotoSites forum user. Together we can create a cool motorcycle community.

Cheers,

David

Great information by David thank you , i totally agree although I haven't ridden a touring bike that much . I don't remember not liking instruments on a bike Blush mostly because to me their purpose is much more informational rather than graphical, i like to enjoy the ride more and not let myself be distracted by details

PS:If the project ended let us know what happened Smile

As a previous and present owner of touring bikes I can tell you that there is no such thing as a perfect bike and there will always be that annoying gauge or that tachometer that is way too big for your liking. These bikes are great and the major flaw is that most of them don't have adequate seats for my liking, I don't know if I am picky or the seats are bad but few touring bikes other than my own were pleasing to the rear side after a long journey

Hey any projects on sports bikes? TongueKidding'

It's a good thing that schools and colleges are getting involved in such a project, the lifestyle of a rider has been widely misunderstood and has created urban myths about the "bad rider" and the "race boys" that are unfounded
