Speedometer housing split Quote | Reply

Has anyone else ever encountered this? I took my Connie to the dealer because the front tire was leaking air, and fixing that was no problem. However, when the mechanic was putting the wheel back on the bike the speedometer housing split. When he looked at it he found that it had split previously and been welded.

The guy at the counter checked their records and found that they had done the weld five years ago. I had no recollection of this but it was there in their records so I believe it. But what would cause that thing to split like that? Just for clarification, this is the piece that is attached to the spacer at the hub of the front tire. The speedo cable threads onto the housing.

They were good about minimizing the cost to me of all this so I'm not complaining. I'm just wondering why this should be a problem at all. Any ideas?
