Put bike on centerstand, try as hard as you can to have the stand legs on top of something like a 2x6. You need the extra lift. Remove left hand muffler. The axle will not clear around it. (Oddly enough, the manuals don't really make this requirement very clear.) Take care removing the 2 philips screws holding the trim cover at the front; they rust, use an impact driver if you have one. Very possible they'll strip threads anyway coming out. If you pull the muffler off carefully you can reuse the seal that goes between the muffler & the exhaust pipe. Disconnect the rear brake caliper, wrap it in a rag and let it rest on top of the right hand muffler. Remove the cotter pin and axle nut. As the axle slides out there's a spacer (about 1/2" thick) that will drop out from between wheel & swingarm. This needs to come out so that now you can pull the wheel/tire to the right and disengage it from the final drive. With the extra height provided by having the stand raised on the wood, you can slide it out from under the bike. The plastic fender extension will flex enough to clear the tire.
