Hi Ken,
I would recommend you register for free with Chromeheads, who are a great bunch of guys, and only deal with cruisers. They will be able to point out important issues to look for before purchasing.I recall them mentioning about the final drive ,giving problems at 20000, but its not definite.Main issues are the poor quality chromework, which starts to blister, but I can live with that.I have a 1999 R1200C Montauk, which gives me great satisfaction, and I do the servicing and repairwork myself. These bikes in my opinion are going to be sought after in a couple of years, seeing that BMW undertook to build the only Cruiser and stopped.
Look for telltale signs like oil leaking under final drive or the rubber covering the driveshaft by the swingarm.Establish if the bike has been serviced regularly, or if it has mostly been standing.Check the condition of the tyres, and be ready to purchase a new set ,front and back, as a precaution, even if they look good to you.Go for Metzlers as they are for all German bikes. The only way to become more familiar with this machine, would be to go onto Chromehaeds.Best of luck, and if you buy remember to keep the tires on the tar.
Regards,
Louis

Hi i bought this model and love it to bits wow!!! ....the bike is fantastic to look at a 97 r1200c with 40 klm cost e2480 yes the chrome is a problem the front wheel is the worst ..may consider doing a powder coating will see ...
problems with the bike the rear brake failed ..and was running lumpy fixed for e120 aroud 150$ new plugs and brake fluid replaced ....

then full service replace battery(plugs allready done and brake fluid) and oil pressure switch gasket repalce which was causing an oil leak ...wait for it... e800 cash and this was with the dealer whio did all the servicing with previous owner..bike running nicely now but at 13 years old it wont be like new .. love the bike the looks alone are worth having the bike for ...but the freedom i feel on this machine is great its like growing a pair of wings ...ken
