Just bought 1996 R1100RT. 1st BMW and emotional purchase w/o research.

Issue 1: Slight grind 50% of the time into 3rd. Occassional hard grind. Grind downshifting into 1st above 20mph. No grind below that speed.
Issue 2: When stopped and idling, put into nuetral and then hear a slight GURRR. Same if instead of nuetral I pull in the clutch.
I appreciate your diagnosis and what next.
THANKS HYMERDUE

Hi Hymerdue,
these noises we hear on our machines are sometimes worse than they sound.I dont want to be a bringer of bad tidings but suspect the clutch, or thrust bearing, which could be rubbing against the diaghpram of the pressure plate, or a finger could be broken on the diaghram.Anyways the best is to strip the g/box and see for your self.Try to get as many opinions from experienced guys, even the agents, because at the end of the day you must decide.I read somewhere that the Cruisers like I own, need the splin shaft to be lubricated with a grease, to enable smooth operation for the clutch plate.Alternatively first check clutch fluid and gearlinkages for correct play.Start with the simpler things, before approaching the more serious one, because I know it's no fun pulling the G/box, and the workmanship quality is questionable.
I hope that it is something simple and wish you luck.
Regards ,
Louis

Change your gearbox oil.
I had a R1100GS and replaced the gearbox oil with Valvoline 75W90 Semi Synthetic - it was like a new box !
Dont drop it into 1st above 20 mph either [;)]

cheers
